Sean Monahan had forgotten his $15,000 bonus

I don’t know about you, but if I had to collect a 15,000 bonus all at once, I wouldn’t be the type to forget it. But the same can’t be said for Sean Monahan.

Because yes, by playing tonight, Monahan will get $15,000. It’s a clause in his contract that stipulates that if the forward plays at least 26 games this year, he’ll be entitled to a bonus.

Why 26? Because last year, his season ended after 25 games.

You might say that the CH forward and I don’t exactly have the same bank account and that explains why Sean Monahan forgot he had a bonus in his contract, but still.

To me, it just shows that he’s not worried about money. The man who signed a one-year contract with the Habs a few days away from full autonomy simply wants to play hockey under conditions that are good for him.

And that’s why it was journalists who told him this morning that his bonus was about to be confirmed. Guillaume Lefrançois reported the news in La Presse.

Monahan earns $1.985M in guaranteed money. With the $15,000, that’ll bring the total to $2M.

Note that if the Habs don’t have the necessary funds to place his bonus this year, they can defer it until next year. However, the amount will be paid to the player in 2023-2024.

Nor is it an amount that will prevent other teams from wanting him at the next deadline.

He had no choice but to sign at a discount this year, and we’ll see in 2024 where his priorities lie, but we still feel that the Ontarian is playing for the right reasons this season.

I wasn’t even aware of it, to be honest. It’s good you reminded me, I’m going to have to put some money on the board. – Sean Monahan to Stu Cowan

Let’s not forget that he went through a dry spell in November, but still has 15 points in 25 games. He mostly played with guys who aren’t natural scorers, let’s say.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in his case.

In bursts

– His comeback seems to be nearing.

– He seems like a good person.

– A great traveller.

– Interesting stuff.

– With good reason.
