Future offensive stars: Lane Hutson in the same category as Luke Hughes

Aside from Cole Caufield, I can’t think of another hopeful who has aroused as much passion in Montreal as Lane Hutson.

Since he was drafted by the CH, the only bad things that have happened to him have been because of his small size… Because on the ice, there’s not much to complain about.

But I think we can all agree that it’s his offensive style that appeals to fans. The last CH defenseman to bring the crowd to its feet was P.K. Subban…

And it’s been seven years since he last wore the Flannel uniform. Seven years is a long time.

Much has been written about the American’s NCAA exploits in 22-23, and rightly so. After all, he broke the record for most points scored in a single season by a freshman defenseman…

And that’s allowed him to be linked with some of the NHL’s top prospects. This time, Elite Prospects put him in the same category as Luke Hughes as two future NHL offensive stars:

It’s crazy to think that the CH defenseman is in the same discussion as the Devils’…

Because Luke Hughes was selected 4th overall in the 2021 draft. Lane, on the other hand, was selected with the 62nd pick of the auction…

We can’t say it’s a steal yet, because the kid hasn’t actually played a single game on the Bettman circuit. That said, it’s hard to believe that he’ll become a monumental flop with all the exploits he’s accumulated since last year.

It’s refreshing, I find, to talk like that about a CH prospect. We all know how disappointing the team’s up-and-coming players have been over the past 10, even 20 years… And there are so many factors that have played a role in that.

That’s why it’s even more important to coach them properly. He’s expected to finish next season in Montreal when his team is eliminated from the NCAA, and that’s when we’ll (finally) have a chance to find out a little more about the player he is.

Because it’s all very well to dominate the NCAA and it’s all very well to do well at the World Championships. But constantly playing against NHL players is different.

It’s not the same game.
