Logan Mailloux: even after two years, his past is still the talk of politics
Yesterday afternoon, we finally had some clarity on the Logan Mailloux issue, and it was good news: the young man has received permission from Gary Bettman to play in the NHL.

The CH will decide when he makes the jump to the Bettman circuit, but at least they’ll be able to bring him to the big leagues whenever they want.

Without being a huge surprise, then, it’s still a good thing done. As colleague Charles-Alexis Brisebois wrote this morning, Mailloux will now be able to focus on field hockey, while there will now be fewer distractions.

And in the end, it’s the youngster’s development that will come out on top.

On the other hand, we can expect the issue to continue to cause a stir in the future. Today, for example, the Minister of Sport (at the provincial level), Isabelle Charest, had a word to say about the defender’s case.

Even though it’s been more than two years since Mailloux committed his act.

The Minister said she was still a little disappointed by the CH’s decision not to respect Mailloux’s wish not to be drafted in 2021, but that the young man deserves a second chance.

I understand that the subject has been the talk of the town since yesterday, and I don’t think her comments were based on ill intent (because on the whole, her comments are quite positive), but eventually, we’ll have to move on and focus on the youngster’s future as a field hockey player.

I’m not excusing his past actions, but he’s come a long way since then, and he has the Commissioner’s approval. He’s now entitled to a second chance because he’s earned it, simple as that.

Hopefully, in the future, the conversation around the youngster will revolve around his prowess as a field hockey player and not his past. His progress since the summer of 2021 means he deserves his chance: let’s let him do his own thing now that he’s been given it.
