Jonathan Toews has yet to decide if he wants/can continue to play

In recent weeks, as the National Hockey League’s 2023 draft approaches, it’s only natural that it should be the talk of the town.

Fans of the various teams love the rumours and speculation surrounding the possible selections of their club’s prospects.

However, we mustn’t forget that, a few days after the June 28-29 draft, the NHL free-agent market opens.

In fact, July 1 marks the start of another exciting period in the field hockey world, when the various players no longer under contract will be able to sign with a new team.

This period is also fast approaching, which is why insider Frank Seravalli has compiled a portrait of the top-50 players who could be free agents on July 1.

Ranking 50th is Chicago Blackhawks legend Jonathan Toews.

In the article, Seravalli explains that Toews is also low on his list as the 35-year-old veteran is still considering whether he wants to and can continue to play.

Because of his health problems related to the long-term effects of COVID-19, Toews is not yet sure whether he wants to continue playing field hockey in the NHL.

The winner of three Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks hasn’t made up his mind yet, and isn’t expected to before the free-agent market opens.

That’s why his agent, Pat Brisson, says his client won’t sign a contract when the market opens on July 1.

He explains that if Toews signs a contract with a new team, it will be at a later date.

In the meantime, Toews has a number of questions to answer, starting with whether he feels fit enough to continue playing in the NHL at the 82-game pace.

The former Hawks star must also ask himself if he’s ready to play for a team other than the Chicago Blackhawks, and if he wants to continue competing despite his already crowded trophy cabinet.

In short, should Toews decide to continue playing, it’s clear that several teams will show interest.

We already know that the Edmonton Oilers would love to add the 35-year-old veteran to their roster.

It’s a story to keep an eye on.
