It feels so good to finally see the National Hockey League back in action this week after waiting through a very long summer.
All 32 NHL teams are in top form, and yesterday we were treated to our first Friday night of the 2026–2027 season, with five games on the schedule.
Here's what stood out from the night.
1. A first goal for Cole Hutson
The Washington Capitals kicked off their season last night with a road game against the Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Caps have a very strong team heading into the season, and they'll be ones to watch—especially thanks to the performances of Cole Hutson, Lane Hutson's brother.
In fact, Cole Hutson scored his first goal of the season last night in the Caps' 5–2 victory.

A superb goal that sets the tone for Lane's younger brother's season.
2. Mason McTavish Opens the Scoring for the St. Louis Blues
Mason McTavish was long linked to the Montreal Canadiens through various rumors last season and for part of the summer, though nothing ultimately came of it.
McTavish was traded to the St. Louis Blues, and yesterday, in his first game in that uniform, he got the team on the board by scoring the Blues' first goal of the season.
That didn't take long!

The Blues won 4–0 against the Dallas Stars, but what hurt the Stars the most was the potential loss of Roope Hintz, who was brutally hit in the knee by Brandon Carlo, who was ejected from the game.

Let's hope it's nothing too serious for Hintz.
3. A Brawl Erupts to the Sound of Music
The Detroit Red Wings' season got off to a very rough start last night, first with Dylan Larkin being booed, and then with a 2-0 loss in their home opener against the New York Rangers.
At least there was a funny moment in the game, when Wings forward Marco Kasper dropped his gloves right as the words “kick it” came on in a song playing in the arena.

The crowd reacted, and it made for some great TV.
4. James Hagens' first career goal
The Boston Bruins played their second game of the season last night, and they won again, this time 4–3 against the Winnipeg Jets.
The Bruins ruined the Jets' season opener, in which Kyle Connor scored at least one goal in his ninth consecutive season opener.

5. An $18M first goal for Leo Carlsson
The Anaheim Ducks kicked off their season yesterday in Vegas, winning 4–3 and narrowly fending off a massive comeback by the Golden Knights.
In that victory, the renowned Leo Carlsson scored his first goal worth $18 million a year.
