Let me ask you a question right off the bat.

If you had to name the two players whose names have come up most often in trade rumors in Montreal over the past six months… what would your answers be?

I know what your answers would be: Kirill Marchenko and Matthew Knies. 

There's been a lot of talk about these two players since the trade deadline in Montreal because they fit an interesting profile for a team like the Canadiens, who were looking to add some offensive firepower to their top six.

And that's why it's ironic to see that Marchenko and Knies might (in part) be traded for each other today. The two guys the Habs liked getting traded at the same time—that's something special!

The trade isn't 100% finalized yet, but according to reports, several players are reportedly involved in the deal.

Another key aspect of the deal is Marchenko's contract situation: his agent has been given permission to negotiate an extension with the Leafs… but it's unclear what that will look like at this point.

For the Canadiens… things are about to get interesting.

Could the Knies/Marchenko trade prompt Kent Hughes to act even faster? The Leafs play in the Atlantic Division (which is already very talented), and by acquiring Marchenko, they'd become even more dangerous in the blink of an eye…

At the same time, there won't be many high-quality options left on the market if those two guys are traded for each other…
