Marc Bergevin Takes a Swipe at the Blue Jays, Chris Kreider in a Good Position, and Support for Xhekaj

Did you see what Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said yesterday?

For those who didn't, the Blue Jays star (who is in the first season of a 14-year, $500 million contract) said that his contract was signed based on his past achievements and not to hit 40 home runs every year.

It happened during an interview in Spanish, but Vladdy confirmed to the media covering the Blue Jays that he truly meant what he said.

Ouch…

It's worth noting that all of this happened right after the Blue Jays were officially eliminated from playoff contention. Emotions were running high just a few days before the end of the regular season.

But everyone agrees that making such comments makes no sense at all.

It reminds us of the old mindset in the sports world. Marc Bergevin, for example, gave Brendan Gallagher an overly generous contract to make up for the fact that he'd been underpaid for years. That was common practice in the past.

But apparently, Vladdy thinks the sports world hasn't changed. He thinks the Rogers family gave him half a billion dollars just because of his pretty eyes.

Can you imagine if a Canadiens player had said that in 2026? The city would have gone crazy, I think.

Chris Kreider's Spot

Brendan Gallagher used to sit next to captain Nick Suzuki in the Canadiens' locker room. When he left, Josh Anderson (the new assistant captain) chose not to move and kept his locker.

So now Chris Kreider has that spot.

Chris Kreider plays on the captain's line. He sits next to him in the locker room. He was added to the very select “circle of friendship” following the team's victories.

They clearly want him to feel at home in the city. And that's a good thing.

Florian Xhekaj and the Wave of Support

Right now, one of the big questions surrounding the Montreal Canadiens is whether HuGo will make room for Florian Xhekaj in the opening-day lineup.

The young player certainly deserves it.

And even though Martin St-Louis warns him that nothing is guaranteed, we know that the other guy's brother is getting a lot of support from Canadiens fans right now.

And even though Florian isn't really active on social media, he appreciates the fans' support.

The Canadiens' training camp will wrap up in the coming days. Xhekaj will need to continue proving that he can make a difference, and the Habs will have to make a tough decision to make room for him.
