On a bullpen day, the guys ran out of gas. And good old Michael Lorenzen, in particular, gave up five runs in two innings.

The Blue Jays were so out of options that the team even sent Spencer Arrighetti in to pitch two innings.

He was the starter (or at least the guy who was supposed to eat innings) on Friday.

The result? The plan to have Dylan Cease and Jose Soriano pitch on Saturday and Sunday has been changed: they'll pitch on Friday and Saturday.

So: a heavy loss… plans changing on the mound… Trey Yesavage not pitching well in the minors… Andres Gimenez with a hamstring injury…

Could this night get any worse?

Oh, and: the team's rivals have gained ground in the playoff race.

The Guardians pulled off a dramatic win against the White Sox, and the Rangers overtook the Blue Jays in the standings.

The Orioles also won, putting them one game behind the Blue Jays in the playoff race.

No one wants to finish last.

The Blue Jays are going to need Max Scherzer to come through big this afternoon in the final game of the series against the Tigers.

Keep in mind that the Blue Jays will then head to Texas and Baltimore for their final road trip of the season, before hosting the Reds.
