Jacob Fowler, Jakub Dobes, and Samuel Mobnntembeault are all present for the start of training camp with the Montreal Canadiens.

But Kent Hughes made it clear during the team's golf tournament on Monday: the club will not start the season with three goalies on the roster.

And that means there will be a battle at camp for the No. 2 goalie spot, considering that Dobes is the clear favorite after the excellent season he just had.

Will it be Monty or Fowler who starts the season with the team? Good question. Because if it's Fowler, that will mean the Habs have either traded Montembeault by then… or placed him on waivers with the intention of sending him to Laval.

But the second scenario is risky because the Habs could lose the Quebec native for nothing in waivers. Because there will be interest (from at least three teams) if that happens, according to Martin McGuire.

That makes sense.

Montembeault has already proven he can be a quality goaltender in the NHL; he has just one year left on his contract ($3.15 million per season)… and claiming him off waivers wouldn't be a huge risk.

And for a team, it would be easier to go that route rather than pay to acquire Monty via a trade.

But that's exactly the catch: I really have a hard time believing the Habs would put a guy like Montembeault on waivers because we know that's not Kent Hughes's style. We know the Canadiens' GM always wants to maximize his assets whenever he can…

Stay tuned, then. But we'll have the answers to our questions soon enough because the season starts in less than two weeks…
