Could the Oilers revive the Samuel Montembeault deal?

Samuel Montembeault is still with the Canadiens organization.

It's not because Kent Hughes didn't try to trade him—quite the opposite. Louis Jean recently stated that the Canadiens had “done everything” to trade him.

But that doesn't mean the club wants to give him away or trade him at a discount.

It's not too late to trade him, and it's reasonable to think that, if the right opportunity arises, the Canadiens' GM will be able to send him elsewhere.

But for that to happen, an opportunity will be needed.

For example, when the Blue Jackets had injuries in goal, the Quebec native's name was mentioned in Ohio. He's easier to acquire than a Connor Hellebuyck or a Jordan Binnington, for instance.

And now, following the situation with Frederik Andersen (he'll miss training camp and could miss a few weeks of action early in the season) in Edmonton, the Canadiens' goaltender's name has resurfaced in public discussions.

Karine Hains (The Hockey News) is right: this is a topic that needs to be discussed.

After all, even if Monty isn't the savior, the Oilers can't afford not to explore a solution to try to fix the problem in net.

Let's not forget that Connor McDavid isn't under a long-term contract.

Is Montembeault really the answer? One might have doubts. But that's not a question for us to ask—it's up to the Oilers' front office.

It's also worth noting that the Quebec native has often been linked to the Oilers in the past. Two months ago, our colleague Maxime Truman reported on the Canadian club's interest in the Canadiens goaltender, who represented Canada at the Four Nations Tournament.
