Two Quebecers who could be called up soon

After Émilien Pitre was involved in the Freddy Peralta trade last Sunday, two more names could be called up to the majors in the coming weeks.

First up is pitcher Miguel Cienfuegos from the San Diego Padres organization.

The 29-year-old, who pitched for four seasons in independent and semi-professional leagues in Canada before getting his first shot at minor league baseball at age 26 with Fort Wayne in 2023, posted a 2.59 ERA between June 3 and August 2 of this year.

However, two rough outings this week have pushed the Laval native's ERA to 7.35 this season. Consistency will be key in his upcoming starts if a call-up to the Padres' MLB roster in September is to be a possibility.

Cienfuegos isn't the only one seeing the glimmer of major league baseball on the horizon, however, as pitcher Cédric De Granpré was promoted to Triple-A in the Atlanta Braves' farm system two weeks ago.

The Saint-Simon-de-Bagot native began the season at Class A-Fort before moving up to Class AA, which is a remarkable progression. This is all the more impressive given that the Braves' 13th-round pick in 2022 was unable to take the mound during the 2024 season due to major elbow surgery.

The 24-year-old currently has a 5.00 earned run average in two AAA appearances so far, including one as a starter.

These two players will be ones to watch, especially starting September 1, when Major League Baseball teams will be able to expand their rosters from 26 to 28 players, including 14 pitchers.
