Alex Ovechkin has never been afraid to share anecdotes that reveal his personality—and it's particularly… entertaining.

In a recent interview (Empty Netters Podcast), the Washington Capitals captain looked back on a defining moment in his career, when Dale Hunter was behind the team's bench during the 2011–2012 season. At the time, the coach had told his star player after a game that he was a “plumber”—a way of telling him that he needed to simplify his game, work harder, and score goals in tough spots rather than trying to make the perfect play.

And rather than taking offense, Ovi decided to respond… in his own way.

The next day, he showed up to his team's practice with a toilet plunger attached to the end of his stick to mess with Hunter. It was his own unique way of being funny and showing that he was capable of laughing at himself.

And the best part? Dale Hunter—who isn't exactly the most cheerful guy in the world—thought it was funny, too.

The anecdote perfectly sums up Ovechkin's personality.

Despite his superstar status and the fact that he's the NHL's all-time leading scorer, the Russian has never lost his sense of humor.

He's always been known for his infectious energy, his smile, and his good humor. He has the ability not to take himself too seriously, and that has undoubtedly helped make him a leader beloved by his teammates for nearly two decades in Washington.

Because even when he received a clear message from his coach… he found a way to turn the situation into a memorable moment. And we have to tip our hats to him for that, because not everyone is capable of doing so. 

In the end, the suction cup stayed on his stick for just one practice, but the story has remained etched in people's memories.

At the very least, it makes for a great story to tell over dinner!
