This summer, several big contracts were signed across the NHL.

So far, no one has crossed the $20 million-per-season threshold (although Macklin Celebrini could very well have secured a maximum contract worth $20.8 million per season).

However, as of July 1, Matthew Schaefer could very well sign for more than $20 million (especially since the maximum contract will be higher by then).

However, before Schaefer, there are two excellent players who could do so by extending their contracts, which expire on July 1: Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes.

The situation is different in their cases, as I've already explained recently, but it's worth discussing.

Elliotte Friedman discussed Hughes's situation on “NHL Tonight,” and he isn't worried yet that Hughes still hasn't extended his contract.

However, he notes that if it's still not settled by the start of the season, that's when he'll start to worry.

Friedman had his prediction for Hughes' next contract, should he remain with the Minnesota Wild. According to the insider, he predicts a three-year deal worth $18 million per season.

Why three years? It's pretty simple. His brother Jack Hughes is under contract through the 2029–30 season, and extending Quinn Hughes' contract by three years would ensure that he becomes an unrestricted free agent at the same time.

It would obviously make sense to extend his contract for three years.

However, there's another scenario open to Quinn Hughes.

As the website HockeyFeed discussed in an article, there's also the option of simply “testing” the free-agent market and signing directly with New Jersey to join his brothers.

Keep in mind that Hughes has no no-trade or no-movement clause and could end up elsewhere this season if he doesn't reach an agreement with the Wild. In any case, he could simply finish out his season and sign with New Jersey.

In fact, the Devils reportedly have more than $30 million in cap space available for the 2027–28 season. So Sunny Mehta could very well sign him.

Let's see if Hughes extends his contract with Minnesota.
