Zdeno Chara has been racking up the kilometers on foot and by bike ever since he retired from the NHL.

This time, however, his outing didn't go as planned.

As reported by Gino Hard on X, citing information from the Slovak media outlet Sportovy Cas, the former defenseman was involved in a cycling accident in Slovakia after colliding with a 56-year-old runner.

According to Sportovy Cas, after the collision, Chara called emergency services and administered first aid to the runner until paramedics arrived.

The 56-year-old man was reportedly taken to the hospital. Doctors reportedly diagnosed him with multiple fractures and a concussion.

The impact must have been severe.

The police then conducted an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident.

Result: Police reportedly concluded that the former star NHL defenseman was not responsible for the accident.

Slovak media reports that, ultimately, the runner changed direction right in front of Zdeno Chara, and he could not have done anything to avoid hitting him.

Chara nevertheless agreed to comment on the events with Sportovy Cas. The former Boston Bruins captain explained that he remained at the scene after the accident to assist the injured rider until emergency responders arrived.

He also noted that he is still in contact with the cyclist's family and, above all, hopes that the cyclist will recover as quickly as possible, of course.

Since retiring, Zdeno Chara's name has mostly come up when he takes on a new athletic challenge, particularly marathons. This time, unfortunately, the former Bruins defenseman is making headlines following a bicycle accident.

Fortunately for him, the police investigation concluded that he was not at fault for the collision. He now hopes—and so do we—to see the cyclist make a full recovery from his injuries.
