Nathan MacKinnon: “If he becomes available, the Habs would be well-positioned to acquire him”
There aren't many teams in the NHL that are in as good a position as the Canadiens.
There aren't many teams that have their core players signed at very reasonable prices, in addition to having quality prospects AND draft picks that hold some value.
The Habs, for their part, have the luxury of being one of those teams.
That means Kent Hughes would have what it takes up his sleeve to make a big trade… and of course, we're allowed to dream a little.
That said, the Connor McDavid situation will be one to watch in the coming years if he becomes available… and Jimmy Murphy (Sick Podcast) has also mentioned a player like Nathan MacKinnon, should he become available in Colorado.
Nathan MacKinnon in Montreal—that would be… something:
Just throwing this out there:
Could the #GoHabsGo ever pry Nathan MacKinnon away from the #GoAvsGo? https://t.co/vzTusl7jP0

Nathan MacKinnon is under contract through the summer of 2031 (at a salary of $12.6 million per season), but the Avalanche will have to resolve the Cale Makar situation soon—and it's going to be expensive.
The defenseman could very well be the first NHL player to reach the $20 million-per-season mark on his next contract… and his current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2026–2027 season.
The Avalanche will have to shell out big bucks for their defenseman, and given the price tag, Jimmy Murphy wonders if this could impact MacKinnon's future in Colorado…
The beauty of it is that Kent Hughes can take his time before making a move.
He's armed to the teeth and is probably waiting for a big name to become available to pull off the blockbuster move we've been expecting since the start of the summer. But if we wait and it results in a player of MacKinnon's or McDavid's caliber (even if that's unlikely), it'll be worth it…

– Note:
Samuel Montembeault is back on the ice this morning in Brossard, after leaving practice just 15 minutes into it last Monday and not returning afterward.
At first glance, he doesn't seem to be experiencing any discomfort while moving around.
