The Red Wings have two major issues to resolve before the start of next season.

The first, of course, concerns the future of Dylan Larkin, who is still looking to move on.

The second is just as important. The organization still hasn't found a general manager to succeed Steve Yzerman.

It is precisely this connection between the two issues that was raised by Aaron Ward on the “Melnick in the Afternoon” podcast on TSN 690. According to the former NHL defenseman, Detroit should first hire its next GM before making a decision as important as the future of its captain.

Honestly, his reasoning makes sense.

After all, the next GM will be the one responsible for building the team. It would therefore be surprising if he took the job only to find that his best player had been traded in a deal he didn't even have a hand in.

In the meantime, Steve Yzerman is still running the team until a new general manager is hired.

Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News reports that the Wings are still no closer to trading Larkin. The same is true for the search for a new general manager.

Both issues still appear to be at a standstill.

In fact, the two situations may be linked.

If Detroit is truly waiting to hire its next GM before trading Larkin, that would explain why discussions don't seem to have made any progress.

It's also important to remember that we're not talking about just any player. Larkin has been the Red Wings' captain for several seasons and remains the face of the organization. A decision like this could shape the franchise for years to come.

The future general manager will likely want to have a say in the matter. A new vision can sometimes change a lot of things, especially when a change in leadership is underway.

Who knows? We might even see Larkin start the season in a Wings uniform.

Unless, of course, the relationship between the two sides has already reached the point of no return.

For now, there's no indication that a trade is imminent. The Red Wings continue to search for their next general manager, while the Larkin situation remains on hold.
