The Twins acquire A.J. Minter: They’re on the buying side

The Minnesota Twins surprised the entire baseball world in 2026, to the point that they are currently just one game away from the final playoff spot.

In fact, as recently as Tuesday, the team's general manager, Jeremy Zoll, told reporters that he was pleased with his players' performance and that he would consider adding pieces to the puzzle before Monday's trade deadline.

And that's exactly what he did. Representatives from the Twin Cities acquired reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets in exchange for the organization's No. 29 and No. 21 prospects, Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick.

Sorry to offend anyone's sensibilities, but this is just plain stupid on the Twins' part.

I understand that Minnesota has one of the worst bullpens in Major League Baseball, with the team's relievers ranking 26th in ERA (4.92) and opposing batters' batting average (.259) and 29th in WHIP (1.52).

The Twins needed arms to add depth to their bullpen, and they acquired one of the best left-handers available, Minter, who has playoff experience and won a World Series with the Braves in 2021.

But WHY?!

The Twins simply DO NOT have the roster depth to compete for another two months against several hungry teams, especially since they traded away almost everything at last year's trade deadline. This is especially true if it costs them prospects on top of that just to improve.

Furthermore, this year's trade market is a seller's market, and the Twins could have taken advantage of the opportunity to cash in on the peak value of players like Joe Ryan, Ryan Jeffers, and Byron Buxton.

Instead, Minnesota will likely not even finish this season with a .500 record and will have taken a step backward in its development.
