Let's talk about the only open GM position in the NHL.

Will the Detroit Red Wings hire a man with about a year of experience in hockey to replace Steve Yzerman as head of hockey operations for the Red Wings?

The question seems ridiculous. But it has to be asked.

Max Bultman, who covers the Red Wings for The Athletic, is pondering a candidate who fits that profile. To what extent? To the point that a good portion of his article today was devoted to him.

We're talking about Jeff Greenberg, the general manager of the Detroit Tigers—who share the same owner as the Red Wings.

Basically, we're talking about an executive who has spent a lot of time working in baseball. For 10 years, from 2012 to 2022, he worked his way up through the Cubs' organization.

Then, in 2022, the Blackhawks interviewed him for their GM position. Kyle Davidson got the job, but he hired him as his assistant anyway.

Then, in 2023, when Scott Harris was named president of baseball operations for the Detroit Tigers, he hired Greenberg to be his GM. They met while working for the Cubs.

Right now, with three days to go before the baseball trade deadline, Greenberg is a bit busy as the Tigers' GM. He's helping his boss trade the best pitcher on the planet… to the Dodgers, no doubt.

It's worth noting that Chuck Greenberg, Jeff's father, is a friend of Mario Lemieux. He has, in the past, tried to buy the Stars and the Hurricanes, but without success.

Should the Red Wings entrust the leadership of hockey operations to someone with so little NHL experience? It's a question that naturally arises.

Perhaps he'll just be consulted for his opinion, given the ties between the Tigers and the Red Wings—and considering that Steve Yzerman did that for the Tigers recently. But Greenberg might actually be granted a formal interview.

Is this guy going to trade both Tarik Skubal AND Dylan Larkin in the same month? Hehe.

In the past, the Sabres and the Oilers put their trust in a soccer guy, Ralph Krueger, to coach their teams. It wasn't a successful experiment.

Would the Red Wings have a better chance by looking to MLB?
