Marc Bergevin didn’t get the GM job in Calgary

It’s search and replace season for senior management positions in the NHL, following the inevitable post-season firings and early playoff eliminations.

Marc Bergevin, an advisor in Los Angeles over the past year, has thrown a few lines into the water.

In particular, he was interested in the Penguins’ GM position, but was unsuccessful in the first round of interviews.

Bergevin was subsequently named as a potential contender for the Flames job, being one of at least four candidates to visit Calgary for an interview last week.

In the end, however, it was an internal candidate who got the job.

Darren Dreger revealed this noon that former Flames player and current assistant GM Craig Conroy would get the job in the coming week.

According to Flames reporter Julian McKenzie, the addition of Jarome Iginla as special advisor would come as no surprise, considering Conroy’s promotion. We’re talking about a role similar to Vincent Lecavalier’s with the Canadiens.

Craig Conroy played for Calgary from 2000 to 2004 and from 2006 to 2011, posting seasons of 75, 59, 48 and 47 points for the organization. He has spent the last 13 years on the club’s staff.

Conroy was a 6th-round pick of the Canadiens in 1990 and scored one goal in 13 games with the Tricolore early in his career.
