Cam Skattebo seems to have learned his lesson. The New York Giants running back acknowledged that he sometimes tends to take unnecessary risks, and his recent backflip at Fanatics Fest led to a talk with team officials.
Skattebo says he got the message.
“Obviously, I do stupid things sometimes, but I can learn from that,” he acknowledged. He even admitted that he probably doesn't plan on doing another backflip anytime soon.
However, the player hasn't completely given up on his stunts. He's simply decided to put them on hold during training camp.
“When games start, we'll see. Right now, we're focused on training camp. We'll save the backflips for the field for now,” he said.
The Giants are counting on his return
Caution is particularly important in his case. Skattebo is trying to regain full fitness after suffering an open fracture in his right ankle last October.
Much of his offseason was devoted to rehabilitation before he was able to gradually resume training in the spring.
Despite everything, his return looks extremely promising. Skattebo believes he's almost back to his best.
“I feel 99 percent,” he said, explaining that the real test will come when he can put his shoulder pads back on and take hits again.
The Giants also seem to have high expectations for him. During the first three days of camp, Skattebo got the first reps at running back, unlike last season when he shared the workload more with Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Harbaugh clarified, however, that nothing has been officially decided yet regarding the distribution of reps.
One thing is clear, though: New York wants to see the aggressive, physical Skattebo who quickly earned the organization's trust.
For now, the player seems to have realized that he'll need to pick his moments when it comes to showboating. His priority is now much simpler: to be fully ready when the real contact begins.
