The situation with the CH's goalies is causing quite a stir.

Will Samuel Montembeault start the season with the Habs or elsewhere? Will Jacob Fowler start the season in the NHL or in Laval with the Rocket?

All we know is that, barring an injury, Jakub Dobes will be the No. 1 goaltender.

In fact, the main question on everyone's mind is how closely Fowler's situation is tied to Monty's. Even if the Quebec native isn't traded, will the Habs consider keeping Fowler on the main roster?

There are quite a few goalies who will be competing for a spot in Laval. But if the Canadiens determine that the American would benefit from playing significant minutes down there, his situation will take priority.

But if Fowler were to earn a spot in the NHL and Samuel Montembeault were still there, what would that look like? Another three-way situation?

Richard Labbé (La Presse) wrote in an article that the veteran goaltender (i.e., Montembeault) had made it clear he wasn't interested in being caught up in another three-way situation.

Remember that Monty was in a three-way rotation with Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau a few years ago (23-24), but also (twice) with Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler last year.

And the second time, he was still in the stands. It wasn't a true three-way competition.

Montembeault isn't fooled: he knows he's the odd man out right now. He knows that if there's a three-way rotation, he risks finding himself in a difficult position (third goalie, waivers, etc.) faster than you can say “Jack Robinson.”

The Quebec native, who publicly stated that he wanted to be clearing out his locker at the end of the playoffs, knows his contract is up… and he wants to play. You can't blame him.

He's always had an exemplary attitude, but he's still a competitor. He wants to play in the NHL, and we understand that. But if not in Montreal, then where?

It's worth noting that in an article in the Journal de Montréal, Vincent Duquette said that interest in Samuel Montembeault seems to be “non-existent” at the moment.
