Brendan Gallagher has two good reasons for learning French

I’ve just watched a captivating interview involving Frédérike Bédard, spouse of Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, and Emma Fortin, fiancée (since last summer) of Brendan Gallagher. The two young women discussed the “hidden side” of being the girlfriend of a Montreal Canadiens player, via the TVA Nouvelles platform.

Emma, Gally’s partner, also stressed the importance of the French language to her, and Brendan is well aware that this facet is crucial to communicating better with his mother-in-law and future children.

“That’s what I keep telling him like if he doesn’t learn it, it’s going to be our secret language and he won’t be included. […] Fack, it’s clear that for him, it’s a motivation. And you know, my mother comes from the Saguenay, so she’s very French-speaking, so that’s also a motivation for him to be able to communicate more with her!

The Tricolore’s new organization chart attaches great importance to the language of Molière, and since last January, between eight and ten players have expressed an interest in learning the language. Among them were Brendan Gallagher, of course, Michael Pezzetta and Jordan Harris.

Nick Suzuki is also one of them, appearing in a “Pepsi” commercial with David Savard, where he demonstrates a surprising fluency in French.

It’s worth noting that the first words spoken by the English-speaking members of the blue-white-red club are undoubtedly the famous Québécois swear words, always popular in a hockey dressing room.

Returning to the two companions, they noted that all the players’ girlfriends were in the same boat, which certainly led to a natural complicity.

“We’re all in the same boat, we’re all alone sometimes, so having dinners together to get together helps!” – Frédérike (RHP’s spouse)

“Four of us got engaged this summer, so we organized a weekend in New York to celebrate all together!” – Emma (engaged to Brendan Gallagher)

In the end, Frédérike and Emma dotted their i’s and crossed their t’s when it came to the stereotyping of hockey wives.
