Sean Monahan: David Pagnotta reveals the asking price for his services
The Canadiens acquired Sean Monahan on August 22, 2022 from the Calgary Flames.

And if I told you then that “Mony” would still be with the Montreal Canadiens on January 15, 2024, you’d probably call me crazy.

And rightly so, because we didn’t know much about the forward.

We didn’t know if he was going to be able to stay healthy, and that’s what was “worrying” in the first place. Anyways.

Monahan is still a member of the Montreal organization, but Darren Dreger said last week that the veteran “will be traded sooner rather than later” .

The goal is to allow him to play for a club with Stanley Cup aspirations… And the goal for Kent Hughes is to get the maximum in return for his forward, who has a nice value on the market right now.

At least, I say he’s worth a lot, because according to David Pagnotta, the asking price for his services is quite high:

Monahan’s price (24 points, $1.985 million per season) is a first-round pick or a second-round pick with a prospect. – David Pagnotta

It may seem surprising to some. But Sean Monahan is a seasoned National League veteran, he doesn’t earn an astronomical salary and he’s the perfect player for a club looking to add depth at center.

Monahan is no longer the 80-point player he was in Calgary, we agree.

That said, his experience and maturity make him a (very) reliable player on the ice, which is exactly why he’ll be in demand between now and March 8.

All the more so as his contract expires at the end of the current season, making him even more attractive to the various NHL GMs.

On the other side of the coin, we know that Monahan is important to the Habs and plays a big role in the team’s success. The Habs could be letting go of a player who fits in well with the team’s mentality and is appreciated in the dressing room, which is a shame in a way…

But the NHL is a business and Kent Hughes has to make sure he maximizes his assets to help the club in the long term.
