It was a fairly quiet Sunday in the NHL last night, with only two games on the schedule.

Without further ado, here’s what caught the eye on the Bettman circuit last night.

1. Red Wings win despite late arrival in Toronto

Over the past few days, the weather has been causing a ton of problems in the sports world. The NFL in particular has been forced to juggle its playoff schedule, but the NHL is also feeling the effects of the weather.

Yesterday, for example, the Red Wings were scheduled to play a game in Toronto at 7pm. The problem was that the team’s plane was delayed, so the Wings arrived in Toronto at 6pm.

The start of the match was delayed by around 50 minutes to give the visitors time to prepare.

With all that, you’d have thought that home advantage would have really smiled on the Maple Leafs… but clearly that wasn’t the case, as the Red Wings were able to win by a score of 4-2.

The winning goal was scored by Andrew Copp with less than two minutes remaining in the third period. Lucas Raymond completed the scoring in an empty net.

The Red Wings now have at least one point in their sixth consecutive game, and are 5-0-1 on the season.

Ilya Samsonov made his first NHL start since December 29. He turned aside 20 of the visitors’ 23 shots in defeat.

2. Alexis Lafrenière celebrates three years in the NHL in style

On January 14, 2021, Alexis Lafrenière played his very first NHL game. He failed to make the score sheet, as his Rangers were defeated 4-0 by the Islanders.

Yesterday afternoon, Lafrenière celebrated his third anniversary in the NHL, in action against the Washington Capitals.

And for the occasion, Laffy spoiled himself, scoring what turned out to be the winning goal. In fact, he was the game’s first star.

The Rangers won a game with a more defensive flavor, as the final score was 2-1 in their favor.

Max Pacioretty picked up an assist on the Capitals’ goal, scored by T.J. Oshie.
