Patrick Kane could already be leaving the Detroit Red Wings

Patrick Kane and his agent Pat Brisson made sure the 88’s backs were well protected before signing a four-copy deal with Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings.

The one-year, $2.75 million contract includes the following stipulation: if the Red Wings don’t find themselves in playoff contention by the deadline, Yzerman has agreed to trade Kane to a contender.

At the time of writing, the Wings are out of the playoffs with a shitty record of two wins and eight losses in their last ten contests. Derek Lalonde’s men are also riding a two-game losing streak.

What’s peculiar is that this nightmarish sequence occurred when the 88, who has been with the Wings for 11 games, was on his way out.

However, with Kane’s presence and stature, and 11 points, including six goals, in 11 games, it’s hard to point the finger at him. Instead, it’s David Perron who’s been drowsy offensively, with a lacklustre harvest in recent games.

Perron’s last point came on December 5. He was absent for six games to serve a suspension. Since his return, he has picked up no points in three games…

That said, if the Wings don’t get back on track, Yzerman will have to keep his word by finding a suitable formation for the 35-year-old veteran.

If he really does end up in the shop window, a ton of teams will be lining up to dance with Yzerman, including the Rangers, Oilers, Avalanche, Stars, Panthers and Maple Leafs.

That’s an important name to keep on your radar between now and March 8.
