2 points in 12 games: Jesperi Kotkaniemi back on earth

The Carolina Hurricanes don’t play until 10pm tonight. So we can analyze the play of our favorite player, Sebastian Aho Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

We haven’t talked about the Finn in a few days. So it’s time to catch up on his recent performance.

After an excellent start to the season, the Canadian’s former first-round pick has hit a wall. In his last 12 games, he has collected just two points.

At the end of November, he would have been the Canadiens’ leading scorer. And that would still be the case nearly two weeks later. Sean Monahan, who has as many goals as KK, is the only Habs player with eight goals this season. I say that before tonight’s games are over, of course.

Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook all have seven goals. In the case of the last-named, he’ll stay at seven for a while yet.

But getting back to Kotkaniemi, he’s on a five-game pointless streak. During that stretch, he’s posted a minus-3 differential. Not ideal for the team’s second-trio center.

Overall this season, number 82 has 15 points in 26 games. Far from a disaster. If he were still in Montreal, he’d be the team’s fourth-highest scorer, tied with Monahan again.

And if you want to compare him to his own team, he’s seventh in scoring, tied with two teammates.

Despite his most recent drought, Kotkaniemi remains an important player, producing at a respectable rate (47 points per season).

It’s up to him to do what he did so well at the start of the season.
