None of the top 10 employees (in terms of “cap hit”) is currently in series

In field hockey, as in all other sports, a team needs good players to be successful.

It’s only logical. A team will never be able to win games on a consistent basis, and it won’t win a championship if its line-up is nowhere near the level of the other teams in the league.

That’s how it works in the NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA… And in any other sports league, professional or amateur.

With the ultimate goal of winning, teams don’t hesitate to offer big contracts to the NHL’s best players. But…

In reality, just because a team has a star player doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed success, and just because a player makes a lot of money doesn’t mean he’ll automatically get you to the big time.

The proof?

Right now, the 10 players with the biggest cap hit for the 2022-2023 NHL season are all “out” of the playoffs.

Of course, it has to be said that Jonathan Toews and Carey Price didn’t make the playoffs this year… But still…

When you take a little moment to think about it all, you realize how crazy it all is the same.

It just proves how hard winning and being successful at the professional level can be, even when teams are built with multiple star players. The Leafs, who have three players in the top-7 on the list above, are probably the best example.

On the other side of the coin…

Sometimes, it can work. To counter the Leafs’ example, just look at Kane, Toews and the Hawks in recent years.

After all, both guys signed their contracts on the same day (July 9, 2014), they were the two highest-paid players in the NHL at the time and they were able to win the Stanley Cup with the Hawks in the 2014-2015 season.

In the end, spending a lot of money on certain players can be a winner… But, just the opposite is happening this year.
