The Panthers Are Healthy and Improved: The Atlantic Division Will Be Highly Competitive Again in 2026–2027

Last season, the Eastern Conference was far more competitive than the Western Conference from start to finish, culminating in a Stanley Cup victory by an Eastern Conference team, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Several teams in the East that were eliminated well before the playoffs would have made the playoffs—or at least been in contention—in the West.

The level of play was therefore very high in the East, and even more so in the Atlantic Division, which was the toughest and most competitive division.

Well, looking ahead to the 2026–2027 season, the same situation is likely to repeat itself, as the Atlantic is almost certainly set to remain the best division in the National Hockey League.

It might even be better, as we can all expect a strong comeback from the Florida Panthers next season—they'll be healthy, improved (with the acquisition of Brady Tkachuk), and ready to make the playoffs.

So we're adding the Florida Panthers to the list of Atlantic Division teams that will be fighting for a playoff spot, which means that pretty much every team in the division—except perhaps the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings—will be in the running.

And even Detroit has been trying to make the playoffs for several years now, so it's safe to say that seven of the division's eight teams will be vying for a spot in the spring tournament.

That's huge, and it's going to be very difficult to qualify in this division, which means the Montreal Canadiens had better be ready.

Three spots are guaranteed for the division, and up to five teams from the division could make the playoffs if the top two wild-card teams happen to be from the Atlantic Division.

The competition will therefore be extremely fierce, and the Habs will have to fight from start to finish without experiencing any prolonged slumps.

Personally, I think the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Buffalo Sabres, the Florida Panthers, and the Canadiens are likely to be the teams battling for first place.

However, the Ottawa Senators will be a tough opponent, and the Boston Bruins will be looking to pull off another upset.

In short, it will be another very difficult year for fans of the Atlantic Division, but at the same time, it will be very entertaining, just as it was last season.
