Can you imagine a Canadiens star deciding, in the middle of a game, to give the fans the middle finger, as William Nylander did?

The older among you will say that Guy Carbonneau once did the same. So the answer is… yes.

But in the age of social networking and in a context where William Nylander was at work, I think the proportions of the Maple Leafs player's gesture will be greater. We'll see if that's the case or not.

It's all very well for the player concerned to apologize, but the fact remains that it wasn't the most heartfelt apology in the world. It sounds like it was done just to say it was done.

And obviously, the NHL isn't happy about it.

According to Chris Johnston, the gesture, which Nylander described as a “moment of frustration,” could earn him a slap on the wrist.

The NHL will investigate.

What might a punishment look like? I have a feeling that a good old $5,000 fine, the maximum provided for in the collective agreement, could be on the menu.

That would be logical, at least. Because I don't think suspending Nylander would be appropriate either.

We all agree that Nylander has forgotten to understand that the cameras are part of the game. And without them, he couldn't be paid an inordinate salary because the sport wouldn't be as popular.

In my opinion, his bosses can't be happy right now.
