Sean Monahan could be of interest to the Leafs

It’s a shame Sean Monahan was injured last year, as he would have been a real bargaining chip.

Unfortunately, he never returned to action after a nasty injury early in the season.

This summer, he signed a very beneficial contract for the team, and so far, he’s been healthy. Touch wood. Healthy, with a $1.985 million payroll: the center could be of interest to several teams in view of the trade deadline.

Among them: the Toronto Leafs.

Sportsnet ‘s Luke Foxwrote about the subject a few days ago.

Toronto has a blue line decimated by injuries. Mark Giordano is injured for a while, John Klingberg has forfeited the season and Jake Muzzin is also on the sidelines for the entire season. So it was obvious that Brad Treliving was going to look at defensemen.

He’s been in the mix for Nikita Zadorov, and many believe that Chris Tanev is now the GM’s main target. And he knows Tanev: he’s the one who signed him in Calgary.

Monahan is obviously not a defenseman, and given the Leafs’ offensive punch, one can legitimately wonder why they might be interested in a Habs center.

In his text, Fox states that Max Domi isn’t good defensively and having a guy like Monahan on the third line would be very interesting. By acquiring Monahan, Sheldon Keefe could start using Domi in a more offensive role on the top-6. Alex Wennberg and Adam Henrique are two other guys who could be on Brad Treliving’s radar, according to Fox.

Mony’s defensive game is clearly one of his main assets. But on a team like the Leafs, where there’s no shortage of offense, the Habs center wouldn’t be too disoriented. Indeed, prior to tonight’s games, he was the team’s leading scorer and fourth on the team in points (17 points in 29 games).

With the Leafs, he’d be sixth…

In short, he’d be a great addition. What could Kent Hughes ask for in return?

In short

– A third-round pick for David Savard?

– Cole dropped it.

– Really?

– The Canadiens will have to pay to part with Jake Allen. [BPM Sports]

Poolers beware.

– Funny coincidence.

– Good luck to him.
