Uniform advertising: the Yankees make (quite a bit) more money than the Canadiens
Remember at the start of the season, when the Canadiens announced that RBC would be present on their jerseys at home games? At the time, it was as if the world had stopped turning.

There were many critics of the idea. In the name of the jersey’s purity and value, those against the project chose to take the fight to capitalism.

And finally, for months… nothing. I’ll be honest: I’d forgotten all about it. There have been 1,735 cases since then.

But what got me thinking about it again was when the New York Yankees announced that the Starr Insurance logo would now be on their famous uniform for the rest of time.

What you need to know is that the same kind of comments were made about the Yankees as were made about the Canadiens last fall. After all, both franchises are historic.

But the big difference between the two is the amount of money involved. Remember that the Canadiens have a five-year, $6.3-million-a-year deal with RBC.

The Yankees, on the other hand, have a bigger contract.

In effect, we’re talking $190M (as of now) through 2030. In effect, that’s an offer of $25M per season for the Yankees, making it a very, very lucrative influx of cash.

The Yankees also turned down an offer of $35 million a year to get the right fit on their uniform. The CH won’t even do that over five years, $35M, via advertising on the jersey.

Obviously, there’s a difference between 41 home games for the Habs and 162 games in a baseball season, but the Yankees’ contract is longer and, in the end, simply more lucrative.

190 million dollars versus 31.5 million dollars, it’s like night and day. These are revenues that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, let’s face it.

Yes, the NHL has to eat its way to the top of North America’s major leagues.
