Logan Mailloux “looks like an NHL guy” to Rob Ramage

Over the past few years, the Habs have built up an impressive roster of blue-line prospects. In addition to David Reinbacher in the latest draft, the club is also banking on Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj, Lane Hutson, Adam Engstrôm, Justin Barron and Logan Mailloux, to name but a few.

Clearly, that’s a lot of resources.

That said, Mailloux’s case is perhaps the most polarizing. Aside from the off-ice issues (he’s scheduled to meet Gary Bettman this month to determine whether he’s eligible to play in the NHL), some have doubts about his real potential, especially defensively.

However, in the eyes of Rob Ramage, Mailloux “looks like an NHL guy”. And clearly, as you can read in this article by Stu Cowan, Ramage isn’t too worried about his protégé’s defensive shortcomings.

Over the past two years, Ramage has spent an enormous amount of time watching Mailloux in action (to the point where he thinks he’s seen him more often than his own son during this period). He has followed the youngster’s development both on and off the ice, and is impressed by what he sees.

The young defenseman has done everything asked of him: he’s sought help, he’s taken educational programs and he’s shown sincere remorse. The meeting with the commissioner seems like a formality at this point, as he has made real progress since being drafted by the CH.

Mailloux isn’t a perfect prospect, far from it. Above all, he needs to play a lot of games to continue his development (which Ramage acknowledged), but in reality, he has all the assets to become a more than interesting defenseman on the Bettman circuit.

I can’t wait to see how the meeting with Gary Bettman turns out, and above all, I can’t wait to see if Mailloux can force the club’s hand at the next training camp (assuming he has Bettman’s blessing).

Because in reality, we’re talking about a youngster who may already be the club’s best right-handed defenseman. Nothing less.
