The New Jersey Devils have still not managed to live up to expectations despite a roster brimming with talent.

With the arrival of new general manager Sunny Mehta, several major changes have already been made, and it now seems clear that one priority remains: finding a goaltender capable of taking the team to the next level.

Over the past two seasons, the Devils have finished with nearly identical records of 42 wins, yet they have failed to establish themselves as a true powerhouse in the Eastern Conference.

Yet the team boasts several star players on offense as well as a promising defensive corps.

Mehta wasted no time in reshaping his roster. On June 23, he surprised many observers by trading young defenseman Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames.

A few days later, he sent veteran Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers, creating a significant void in goal.

This move suggests that the general manager is planning another major move.

According to several observers, two names stand out as potential candidates: Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington.

Hellebuyck would obviously be the ideal solution. Considered one of the NHL's best goaltenders for several years now, the Winnipeg Jets' netminder would immediately lend the Devils enormous credibility.

However, convincing the Jets to part with him would be an extremely difficult task.

The other option is Jordan Binnington. The St. Louis Blues goaltender has extensive playoff experience and knows how to win, having led his team to the Stanley Cup in 2019.

Acquiring him would likely cost less than acquiring Hellebuyck.

One thing seems certain: following Markstrom's departure, the Devils don't appear to be done shopping.

If Sunny Mehta manages to land a No. 1 goaltender capable of stealing games, New Jersey could quickly become a very serious contender for the championship again.
