Claude Giroux has signed a new one-season contract with the Ottawa Senators.

He will earn $2 million and has the opportunity to earn an additional $3 million if he can earn all of his bonuses.

For the 38-year-old, this is a sensible deal. He's playing at home, and at his age, he's no longer the same player he was a few years ago.

But… Giroux still had a bigger offer on the table, according to Bruce Garrioch.

The reporter, who covers the Sens in Ottawa, said yesterday on TV (TSN) that it was the Toronto Maple Leafs who offered him the most money for next season.

Imagine the scenario…

I don't know if the Leafs' plan is to piss off the Sens, but… it sure looks like it.

Remember, we saw Daniel Alfredsson leave the Senators yesterday to join the Leafs, having accepted an assistant coaching position in Toronto…

Seriously, this really shows just how aggressive the Leafs have been since the start of the summer.

They've been active in free agency, signing players like Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger, Colton Sissons, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Jack Roslovic… and they also acquired Darren Raddysh during draft week.

In Toronto, they're eager to get back on the winning track, and that's evident in John Chayka's decisions.

And adding Giroux to the roster would have helped even more in that regard… not to mention preventing the Sens from signing a solid veteran who could provide a positive influence in the locker room of a young team like Ottawa's.
