We all remember when Lane Hutson's father reminded us that Alex Galchenyuk's father wasn't the only one who didn't always mind his own business, right?
The father of the young Canadiens player, seeing that his son hadn't been invited to the Americans' Olympic orientation camp last summer, had told Grant McCagg that his son was also a Canadian citizen.
And that, of course, got a reaction. Obviously!
We've recently forgotten about him because his son plays big hockey, but in 2025, we learned that Rob Hutson is a big shot. He was also involved in his son's salary negotiations (which were more difficult than expected).
Last summer, we wondered if the Habs defenseman hadn't been invited to orientation camp because his father takes up too much space in his life.
And on the heels of yesterday's replacement of Seth Jones by Jackson LaCombe at the Olympics, the question is back on the table. We wondered whether his size was the only factor justifying his absence, or whether his father had something to do with it.
And even though the Americans are defending their choice, Tony Marinaro (Sick Podcast) isn't afraid to say that he thinks the Americans didn't take Hutson because they don't want his father around the club.
How can @usahockey possibly justify ignoring the most productive American defenseman in the NHL this season for their Olympic team?#GoHabsGo #thesickpodcast @TonyMarinaro pic.twitter.com/WPFpZHTwn6

Whether or not you think Marinaro is right (I'm one of those who believes the popular host's words), you can't deny that politics and sports go hand in hand.
Obviously, a player who is a lock wouldn't be left out for that. But since Americans are already undecided about Hutson because Quinn Hughes exists, his father's record may tip the scales the wrong way.
His height and his father are probably the two biggest factors working against Lane Hutson. And in both cases, there's not much he can do about it, since the damage has already been done.
In any case, there's still plenty to talk about. After all, the Habs defenseman deserves to be at the Games… and he's not.
