Dominique Ducharme would have liked to rebuild with the Canadiens

Dominique Ducharme is in the news these days. Bruce Cassidy’s new assistant with the Vegas Knights is available for interviews before leaving for Nevada.

He was seen in particular with Tony Marinaro, where he touched on a number of subjects, including Jeff Petry and Cole Caufield, who hasn’t scored much under his watch.

And last night, Ducharme was on 98.5 FM to talk, with Mario Langlois, about several topics surrounding his next challenge, but also surrounding his time in Montreal.

First, he reiterated how happy he was to be joining the Knights organization… and we also learned that he had already come close, in the past, to joining them.

I had no idea.

Before he was hired by the Habs, when he became an assistant in 2018, he talked to Vegas about joining the organization. In the end, it didn’t work out.

But what also catches the eye is when the former coach talks about the end of his reign in town.

Obviously, we know that poor performances, a change in management and the fact that Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes wanted Martin St-Louis worked against Ducharme, but he would have liked to have had his chance.

I would have liked to have been part of the rebuild. – Dominique Ducharme

It will be remembered that, when he lost his job, Ducharme thought it was a shame never to have or to present his vision. He was simply dismissed before even talking to him about the future.

And just as expectations changed when MSL arrived (by then, the focus was no longer on winning every game, but on development), so too did Dominique Ducharme. After all, his mandate was always to win, despite the problems.

The two men are college friends (they chatted together last year, after St-Louis agreed to replace him) and Ducharme doesn’t hold it against him. It wasn’t his decision to be offered the job… and it’s the kind of job you don’t turn down.

So Ducharme can turn the page and return to the NHL. Let’s see what happens.
