Pierre-Luc Dubois: Tampa Bay mentioned as a potential destination
Over the past two days, the Pierre-Luc Dubois case has reached enormous proportions.

We’ve learned that he wants to leave the Jets now, and that, understandably, opens the door to speculation.

Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed the matter yesterday, giving three potential destinations for a possible transaction: Montreal, New York (Rangers) and Minnesota.

Today, Marek linked Dubois’ name to the Stars, Hurricanes…

And to the Tampa Bay Lightning. No, this is no joke.

That’s surprising.

After all, Tampa Bay doesn’t necessarily have a lot of room on their payroll because of the big contracts already in place. If Julien BriseBois trades Kevin Cheveldayoff, he’ll have to “send salary” to compensate, because let’s not forget that Dubois is expected to sign a long-term contract that will bring him quite a bit of money.

In reality, Dubois would be asking for $9 million a year… which is a lot. And the Lightning don’t have the luxury of giving him that kind of money, again, because of the players already under contract in Tampa :

The whole thing remains rather intriguing. Yes, Dubois would like to play in Montreal…

But just because he wants to doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, even if Elliotte Friedman believes the Habs are (by far) his preference when it comes to his next team.

If it does happen, though…

Murat Ates, a journalist with The Athletic who covers the team, raised the idea of Dubois (and Ville Heinola) being traded to Montreal for the fifth overall pick in the upcoming draft, along with Joshua Roy.

The whole thing caused quite a stir, and I don’t necessarily need to explain why.

We’re all wondering what direction the Quebecer will take in the coming weeks. Yes, we’ve been talking about it a lot lately…

But it’s all part of the news, and the issue is attracting attention in all four corners of the NHL.

When a player of his calibre becomes available, that’s often what happens. And now that we know he’d like to play for the Habs, he’s getting even more attention.

The Wild, the Rangers, the Habs, the Stars, the Lightning, the Hurricanes (who have said they want to add some punch to their attack)

Which team will win the Pierre-Luc Dubois derby?
