Pierre-Luc Dubois and the Jets held discussions “this month”.
Do you know the name Pierre-Luc Dubois?

OK. I’ll stop fooling around.

On a serious note, the more the days go by, the more we wonder what the future holds for him. It’s hard to believe he’ll sign a contract extension in Winnipeg, given what we know about his potential desire to come and play in Montreal…

Even if his agent Pat Brisson claims that there have been recent discussions between the player’s clan and that of the Jets.

“It’s confidential at this point. He’s a compensated free agent this summer, but this month we’ve had discussions with the (Jets) team. – Pat Brisson

This month? Today is June 6. That’s why I’m led to believe that there have been discussions “lately” between Dubois and the Winnipeg organization.

The quote comes from his appearance on BPM Sports earlier this morning. But, let’s not think that this automatically means that the Quebecer will decide to sign a new deal with the Jets.

Rather, I have the impression that he’s testing the waters to see what he could receive in terms of salary. If Kevin Cheveldayoff offers him X amount, it gives him something to play for and allows him to think about his options for the future.

The Jets’ plan is clear, by the way. If they were to trade him, Cheveldayoff would want to have established players in return for his services to avoid a rebuild :

Speaking of rebuilding…

Let’s not forget that in the summer of 2024, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck as well as Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele will be free as a bird and they can test the free agent market.

If Hellebuyck decides to leave, as is currently expected in the four corners of the NHL, there is a world in which Scheifele decides to do the same for the same reasons… And the same applies to Wheeler, who is nearing the end of his career.

This would leave Dubois “all alone in the world” in Winnipeg, and I find it hard to believe that at his age, he too would want to be part of a rebuild. The Jets may say they’re not interested in entering a rebuild, but if the pillars of the team start leaving one by one…

They won’t have much choice but to come up with a plan that does just that.

It’s something to think about, and it’s certain to play a role in the main player’s decision at the end of the day.

In brief

– Enjoy your reading.

– Minor signing in Calgary.

– 200% even.

– At least they weren’t injured.
