Shane Wright’s professional field hockey career goes from bad to worse

Despite acquiring Shane Wright earlier in the season, the Windsor Spitfires’ playoff run came to a halt in the first round. The team was eliminated in six games against the Sarnia Sting.

During this round, Wright played only four games and collected three points. Since his team’s elimination from the OHL, the Kraken’s former first-round draft pick has headed to the AHL to join the Seattle Firebirds.

Coachella Valley is in the association finals of the Calder Cup. The team currently leads the series 3-2 and is one win away from the final. However, Wright has no say in his team’s success. In 12 games with the Firebirds, he has just four points, including one goal. He was even left out twice in the previous round.

He returned to the lineup for the first game of the Western Finals, but finished with a minus-2 record.

For a guy who scored 150 points in 72 games at age 15 and was considered an exceptional player at that age, he took a “nasty landing”, if you’ll pardon the expression. It’s still too early to say what his future holds, but so far, he’s given the Canadiens, Devils and Coyotes a run for their money in the draft.

Seattle took a chance, but so far, it hasn’t paid off. Mind you, I’m not saying he’s a bust . Again, it’s far too early to say that.

Did the fact that he wasn’t drafted at No. 1 – as many pundits and fans thought – play on his mind? Perhaps. After all, the right-hander was not only ignored by the CH, but by two other teams. Welcome to professional field hockey, Shane.

In 20 OHL games this season, he still did well, collecting 37 points, including 15 points. It’s at the professional level that the kid seems to be struggling.

He’s only 19, so let’s be patient with him. He’s still improving. At least, that’s what we’d be saying if he were in Montreal…
