Montembeault contract: Kent Hughes must get involved

Over the past few days, Samuel Montembeault has been the talk of the town for all the right reasons. First of all, he got his international tournament off on the right foot by denying every shot he faced against Latvia. He’ll be able to do it again tomorrow morning in the semi-final.

Not only did he put in a number of fine performances, he also earned the praise of many. Earlier today, Eric Engels said he was clearly the best player on Team Canada .

Then, André Tourigny, his coach, reiterated Engels’ words

If you want to extend your contract with the team, you have to do everything you can to get a good contract. In fact, Jean-Charles Lajoie believes that Kent Hughes should look into the matter as soon as possible.

For his part, Stéphane Waite wouldn’t hesitate to extend the Quebecer’s contract for another three seasons. The goaltender will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season.

We know Monty wants to stay in Montreal, but if he has another good season and becomes a free agent, there’s nothing stopping another team from making a better offer. #Moneytalks

In addition to the praise from Engels and his coach, Montembeault also received some kind words from Samuel Blais. The Quebecer, who has collected five points in eight games so far in the tournament, spoke for all his team-mates.

We have an excellent goalkeeper in whom we have enormous confidence. – Samuel Blais

Going to this World Championship was perhaps one of the best decisions the goalkeeper has made in his career. While Montembeault is appreciated and well known in Montreal, he has just made a name for himself internationally and throughout the NHL.

In five games, he has a .949 save percentage and a 1.19 goals-against average. He’s effectively Team Canada’s best player, and if his nation wins the gold medal, he’ll have to be considered the tournament’s MVP.

Given his goalkeeper’s performance in Europe, will Kent Hughes dare to look for a goalkeeper this summer?

In gusts
