Will Smith is seen as a Kucherov 2.0 within the CH organization

Will Smith’s name has grown in popularity in recent weeks in the run-up to the upcoming draft.

In fact, it’s his outstanding performance at the recent World Under-18 Championship that’s getting most of the attention. He dazzled everyone with 20 points in seven games, and often looked like the best player on the ice.

In reality, the American wasn’t “just good”. He was more than excellent.

We know that the Canadiens will have a good draft pick this year, and if Smith is available, there’s a real possibility that he’ll end up in Montreal. This is even truer when you hear a scout say that within the organization, he’s perceived as a Nikita Kucherov 2.0.

And it just goes to show how much interest there is on the Habs‘ side.

I have a good feeling that Smith could cause a surprise by hearing his name called in the top three at the next draft.

Further proof that the development program in the U.S. is excellent if you look at the players who have passed through there in recent years.

Auston Matthews, Patrick Kane, Cole Caufield, Jack Hughes, to name but a few, are all established NHL all-stars…

And Will Smith could certainly be the next to shine in the spotlight.

Unless things turn around, chances are the Habs won’t be fishing in the top-3… Which is why I’d be surprised to see the youngster in a CH uniform anytime soon.

On the other hand, if he’s really, really liked by the organization, which seems to be the case…

Could we see Kent Hughes trying to move up in the draft to make sure he gets his hands on the American, whom he knows very well since Hughes is his former coach?

It’s an idea that could go a long way, especially since the Habs have the tools to do it.
