After months (if not years) of speculation, it's done: Nolan Arenado is changing addresses.

The Cardinals and Diamondbacks have confirmed that they have a deal in place to send the third baseman to the Arizona desert for the rest of his career.

He remains in the Nationals and returns to his former division.

The Cardinals got their hands on prospect Jack Martinez (an eighth-round pick in 2025), but more importantly, they sent $31M for the DBacks to agree to take on the remainder of his contract. There are two years and $42M left on the deal.

We knew it was going to take a big pay restraint to get him out of St. Louis (which the club wanted in order to keep making room for youngsters) and now it's done.

Basically, Arizona will pay the player $5.5 million a year for two years. It's a good bet — and it's a bet Arenado said yes to, as he controls his destiny via his no-trade clause.

Obviously, Arenado won't replace the production that an Alex Bregman would have brought had he signed with the Diamondbacks. But his veteran presence and excellent glove on the third base will help the club.

Who knows if he could become a decent hitter again by changing his tune and going to a team that will be aiming for the playoffs?

Nolan Arenado has also been linked to the Red Sox in the past. The club may have let Bregman go, but it didn't choose to push hard to conclude another deal with Chaim Bloom.

The club retained $59 million to send Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras elsewhere this winter.

We know that Arenado has always wanted to play for the Dodgers, but he's no longer the caliber for that club. Instead, he'll try to hold his own in a fierce division.

Will this be the last stop of his great career? We'll see.
