The Canadiens would offer Mike Hoffman for free, according to Frank Seravalli
Mike Hoffman is far from a crowd favorite with the Canadiens. The 33-year-old forward is not performing up to his $4.5 million annual contract. As a result, Kent Hughes is looking to part ways with him.

That’s what Daily Faceoff reporter Frank Seravalli reported. In fact, not only would Hughes like to get rid of him, he’d like to get rid of him as soon as possible.

Seravalli explains that the CH would be evaluating transaction options involving Hoffman. For the time being, Kent Hughes would be willing to part with him without any return. He doesn’t even want anything.

On the other hand, the Tricolore general manager also doesn’t want to have to add a draft pick to make a deal happen, much like the Flames did when they sent Sean Monahan to Montreal with a first-round pick.

Mike Hoffman has one year left on his contract, and will become an uncompensated free agent in the summer of 2024. Buying out his contract could be an option for Kent Hughes, but he’ll have to pay $1,666,667 over the next two seasons if he decides to go that route.

Obviously, the CH GM won’t want to pay Mike Hoffman for another year, even if it’s at a lower salary.

In my opinion, if Kent Hughes can’t give Mike Hoffman away, he’ll either decide to keep him and put up with it, or he’ll finally crack and offer a compensatory pick to an NHL team.

Hoffman really isn’t worth his contract. In 2022-23, he collected only 34 points in 67 games. That’s a worse point-per-game average than Sean Monahan, who just accepted a contract worth less than $2 million.

Many fans don’t like Mike Hoffman’s work. Among them, Martin Lemay of BPM Sports and RDS probably likes him the least.

It could be a good option to buy out Mike Hoffman’s contract, but with one last year to endure his contract, I think Kent Hughes prefers this option rather than having to pay part of the amount in 2024-25.

Worst case scenario, he’ll be spending a lot of time in the press gallery.
