CH hopeful Vinzenz Rohrer signs two-year contract in Europe

What’s really grabbing the field hockey world’s attention at the moment is the fast-approaching draft, and the transaction rumours that are intensifying all over the National Hockey League.

All field hockey fans are looking forward to the draft, while keeping a close eye on the various potential transactions that could occur at any moment, including the one involving Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Despite all this, between the various mock drafts and trade rumors, we learned earlier today that Montreal Canadiens prospect Vinzenz Rohrer has signed a two-year contract in Europe.

More precisely, the Austrian prospect drafted in the third round (75th overall) in 2022 will normally play with the Zurich Lions in Switzerland for the next two seasons, his 19th and 20th.

To give you an idea, the Zurich Lions represent the Swiss first division team with which Auston Matthews played during his draft season, the 2015-2016 season.

Rohrer will be playing against men for the next two seasons, after spending the last two campaigns in the OHL with the Ottawa 67s.

The 18-year-old had 49 points (19 goals, 30 assists) in 54 games this season, and added 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 11 playoff games.

In short, Rohrer will gain experience in a professional league, not a junior one, before potentially joining the Tricolore.

On this subject, Marco D’Amico shed some light on what this two-year contract in Switzerland means for Rohrer and the Habs.

If the Habs sign Rohrer to an NHL entry-level contract this summer, well, Rohrer could make the jump to the AHL next season.

However, if the CH signs the Austrian prospect to a contract in 2024, well, the first year of that entry-level contract will be burned while Rohrer is playing in Switzerland.

In the end, I don’t think it’s a decision that will amaze the CH management, considering that the Tricolore always prefers to have his prospects as close as possible, but at the same time, it will be a great experience for Rohrer to go and play against men in Europe.

Let’s see where this leads, and if the CH will prefer to put Rohrer under contract this summer.

En Rafale

– That’s a good one.

– So far, here are the Russian players who will be on site for the draft.

– Ouinh hein…

– Torey Krug should not lift his non-movement clause. This could definitively block the big deal between the Blues and Flyers.

– Where will Erik Karlsson end up?

– Montreal CF goaltender Jonathan Sirois has eight shutouts in his last 11 starts.
