Daniel Brière doesn’t expect to see Matvei Michkov in the NHL within 3 years
The Philadelphia Flyers have selected Matvei Michkov with the seventh pick of the latest NHL draft. Philadelphia is still rebuilding and seems ready to wait for the arrival of its new prospect.

In any case, general manager Daniel Brière seems ready to wait. He discussed his selection with Karl Bélanger on 104.7 Outaouais’ Que l’Outaouais se lève program.

“Right now, in my mind, (Matvei Michkov) is going to play the next three years in Russia to develop with his team in St. Petersburg. We’re okay with that.” – Daniel Brière

Mishkov is under contract with SKA St-Petersburg until the end of the 2025-26 season, and his team doesn’t look like letting him go any time soon. That was one of the risks involved in selecting Mishkov at the draft, but it doesn’t seem to scare Brière at all.

It seems to have scared off the teams drafting ahead of the Flyers. It was good news for Brière, who admits he was very surprised to see the Russian forward fall so far in the draft.

When the Flyers had to make their selection, they figured they couldn’t pass up such a promising prospect.

Michkov collected 20 points in 27 games with HK Sochi in 2022-23. He spent most of his season with this team, because St-Petersburg sent him there on loan.

The problem with the Russian prospect isn’t the quality of his play. If that’s all it was, he would have been selected second overall by the Ducks. No, in fact, he would have an attitude problem, which is why the Canadiens made the decision not to select him.

On top of all that, Mishkov could sign another contract in Russia if he wanted to. And let’s just say that the Russians can sometimes be very convincing.

Let’s hope for Daniel Brière and the Flyers’ sake that this selection is the right one and that Michkov doesn’t make them regret this decision.
