Last summer, the Canadiens offered Joe Veleno a one-year contract.
The player, who wore number 90 last season, didn't have a major offensive role with the team; he was mainly used as a depth player and didn't play in every game.
He proved his worth over the course of the season, and we saw him take on important roles in the playoffs. But…
But you can't say that, offensively, Veleno impressed with his production. He tallied a meager five points (two goals) in 61 games… which isn't exactly exceptional.
And that's why, when I read the headline of the following article (The Gazette), it caught my attention.
His move from the Habs to the Rangers could unlock his offensive potential. – The Gazette
I have a hard time believing that's going to happen.

In September 2025, during the Canadiens' last training camp, Jeff Marek essentially said the same thing in a tweet.
But Marek knows how to laugh at himself.
He shared The Gazette's post, saying, “Come on! Who would ever say that?”… and it made me laugh.

Getting back to Veleno…
It would definitely be cool to see him become a productive player in the NHL. He showed a lot of promise before being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, and he generally had strong seasons in the QMJHL.
But we also have to remember that the guy is 26 years old… and that he had to learn to play a different way when he arrived in the NHL because he wasn't able to keep up with the others offensively.
And that's why I'm so skeptical.
