When Craig Button talks about the Montreal Canadiens these days, he's not just talking about a team capable of making the playoffs next year.

According to him, the Habs could be in the running for the Stanley Cup for the next six years.

And, as ambitious as that may sound… there's some logic behind this prediction.

The Canadiens are no longer a team that relies solely on a few veterans who can still deliver: a good portion of their core is still young and should continue to improve over the next few seasons.

Lane Hutson, Ivan Demidov, Juraj Slafkovsky, Jacob Fowler, Jakub Dobes… These guys are likely to get even better in the coming years. And that prompted Craig Button to say this during an interview with The Gazette:

The team already has a lot of good players on its roster, and more promising players are on the way. I think they'll be among the Stanley Cup contenders, and we'll be talking about them for at least the next six years. — Craig Button

I like that.

Note: Craig Button isn't saying that the Canadiens will DEFINITELY win the Stanley Cup over the next six years.

Rather, he's saying that the Montreal team should be in the conversation often enough to have a real chance of making it happen.

And when you look at the age of the current core, the young players coming up, and the progress already shown by certain players, that's not entirely far-fetched. The Canadiens have spent the last few years rebuilding, and at some point, we won't be talking about a team that's trying to turn a corner and still has holes in its lineup.

And that's probably much more important than simply aiming for a playoff berth next year.space
