As of today, Samuel Montembeault is still in Montreal. The goaltender hasn't been traded despite months of speculation about his future, and people are wondering if he'll start the next season in a Canadiens uniform.

Time is running out if the team wants to trade him, you know.

We know, however, that every year, goaltending situations across the league become unclear shortly before the season starts. It was precisely in this context that Monty ended up in Montreal in 2021, let's not forget.

And now, a door may have just opened: the Blue Jackets announced today that goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has just undergone shoulder surgery.

It's unclear when he'll be ready to return, but his start to the season is seriously compromised.

Merzlikins is the #2 goaltender in Columbus, where Jet Greaves is firmly established as the starting goaltender. That said, it's worth noting that the Blue Jackets are under more pressure than ever to win this season.

Zach Werenski's future with the team is in doubt… and Kirill Marchenko, with one year left until restricted free agency, could also leave sooner rather than later.

There's a scenario in which Merzlikins returns before the start of the season or shortly thereafter. In such a scenario, it's reasonable to think the Blue Jackets would be able to hold the fort.

But if his absence drags on, it could become a problem. And Phoenix Copley, who is next in line, was signed to play in the AHL.

Add to all that the fact that Merzlikins has been struggling for the past few years, and one wonders if Montembeault—despite his poor 2025–26 season—might not be an upgrade in the backup role. After all, he's had some good seasons in the past and helped the Habs make the playoffs in 2024–25.

If the Jackets see a guy capable of bouncing back and Merzlikins has a long road to recovery ahead of him, it's easy to draw the connection.

We also know that Don Waddell and Kent Hughes have done business in the past. The two men completed the trade that brought Patrik Laine to Montreal… and we know that over the past few months, they must have had a few chats about Kirill Marchenko.

And no, we obviously shouldn't expect Monty to help the Habs land Marchenko. But if Kent Hughes helps his counterpart get out of a tight spot, it certainly won't hurt the line of communication between the two executives for future talks.
