Dylan Larkin made headlines several weeks ago when he asked General Manager Steve Yzerman to trade him.
He no longer wants to be part of a plan that's going nowhere. But will he change his mind once he sees the Wings' new direction?
That's the question The Hockey News columnist Ryan Lambert is asking.
In his article (THN), Lambert lists the first three tasks the new GM will need to tackle: the vision for the roster, the timeline for becoming competitive, and finally, what to do about the captain.
It's clear that if Larkin had issues with Yzerman's plan, his desire to switch teams might change. After all, it won't be the “Yzerplan” anymore. Elliott Friedman (NHL Tonight) is certain that the new boss will do everything he can to keep No. 71 in town.
Elliotte Friedman: On the Red Wings: I see a scenario where someone comes in and takes this [management/GM] job and says, “I want to sit down with Dylan Larkin and see if I can change his mind; sell him on a plan…” but I think right now that's uncertain – NHL Tonight (7/15)

It's also possible that Larkin simply wants to leave Detroit and that, new GM or not, he won't be a member of the Wings at the start of the season.
But there's a scenario in which the future general manager's plan will be so compelling that the 29-year-old captain will want to stay. In 11 seasons with the Wings, the American has played in only five playoff games. He wants to win, and Yzerman's team, unfortunately, wasn't going anywhere.
Since the start of the summer, it's been widely expected that he'll be traded.
What if he were never traded, started the season in Michigan, and “Yzerman's departure” was actually a move to keep the best player in town…?
