In the NHL, injuries are an integral part of the game, but we know that it's always difficult to remain competitive when several pieces of a club are injured.
At the Montreal Canadiens, the infirmary is always very busy. Currently, Patrik Laine, Alex Newhook, Jake Evans, Kirby Dach, Mike Matheson, and Kaiden Guhle are all sidelined.
It's definitely not helpful to have so many players absent (especially since some very important ones are missing), but the Habs still have their share of success.
According to Eric Engels, Kirby Dach may unfortunately be sidelined for longer. Nothing to help the cause.
However, according to Engels, Kaiden Guhle could return sooner rather than later, which would be a welcome addition to the lineup, as the Habs' defensive brigade badly needs Guhle.
The Canadiens are being cautious with Kirby Dach's return from a fractured foot. We're at the six-week mark, but it might be just a bit longer before he's
.
Meanwhile, Kaiden Guhle is trending in the right direction. There is some optimism that he could be back shortly after the Habs return from the road.– Eric Engels (@EricEngels) January 1, 2026
On the bright side, Guhle could be back sooner.
Not to say that Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, and Adam Engstrom aren't playing well, but you can't have all three in your lineup at the same time.
Especially with Mike Matheson injured (the Habs announced it just before the Hurricanes game), there are two big holes on the Habs blue line right now.
We still don't know how long Matheson will be out, but the elbow to the head (courtesy of Brad Marchand) suggests it could be a concussion… Let's wait and see the official verdict.
Getting back to Dach, his prolonged absences are starting to become too recurrent. When a talented young player misses so many games (less than 300 games played in his 7th season), it's very difficult to develop to his full potential.
According to Engels' tweet above, the Habs are being extremely cautious in his case, as he fractured his foot. He's been injured for six weeks now (out of an expected absence of four to six weeks) and doesn't seem to be close to a return to action.
We'll probably have to wait a little longer for Dach to return to 100%.
